Peppering The Goalie (Random Thoughts)
Here are just a few things I've been thinking about lately, presented in a Larry Kingesque/Andy Rooneyish/Jerry Seinfeldian format:
Is anybody else as happy as I am to see Mariah Carey make a comeback? Anybody? Now, if we could just get Barbra Streisand to go away....
For my money, there's no better-tasting beer on earth than Young's Double Chocolate Stout, brewed in Wandsworth, London, England. Who knew they made ales with chocolate? Since stout is a very dark ale with roasted barley, a glass of this stuff tastes like a glass of chocolate coffee with an alcohol kick (5%). It's great stuff. It's sometimes tough to find in this country, but it's worth it if you can get your hands on some and you like dark beer. Some people don't. I didn't always like dark beer (or any beer, for that matter!), but now I prefer darker beers. How ironic!
I was very sorry to see Stephenie LaGrossa voted off of Survivor: Palau on Thursday night. She became my all-time favorite player on Survivor over the course of her time on the island, and she really deserved a better fate than what she got. She got stuck on the wrong tribe - an eagle among a bunch of turkeys. My only hope is that we will see her in the game again. If they ever have another All-Stars, I would think she would be an obvious choice. Like Rupert Boneham before her, she became popular and made a real impact even though she didn't win. She'd be a definite force to be reckoned with on an All-Stars season.
It might just be me, but it's gotten to the point now where I can hardly watch a movie or TV show or listen to a song without thinking to myself, "I wish I knew the opinions of the actors/singers on world history, foreign policy, military strategy, diplomacy, and geopolitics. I would enjoy the performance so much more if I knew that". It's distracting. These people really should be sought out and given a forum for their views, because I'm sure they represent a vast, untapped storehouse of expertise in these areas. I wish they weren't so reluctant to speak about it. As Homer Simpson would say, "Celebrities. Is there nothing they can't do?". I'm sure President Bush and his staff have some very insightful things to say about how to help them improve as actors or singers, but no one ever asks. It's a shame.
My Minnesota Vikings have had a very, very productive off-season, combining addition-by-subtraction (Moss trade) and a few excellent trades and several major free agent signings with a draft last weekend that's been universally lauded as excellent by fans and experts alike. I'm thinking Super Bowl, baby!
"The Simpsons" is hands-down the funniest show ever to appear on television, bar none. Matt Groening and the writers of that show are geniuses. I can't imagine a world without it. It would be like the world always looks in black-and-white photographs from the early days of cameras. It always seemed to me like the world actually was all black-and-white then. They had colors in their world, just like we do now, but it's hard to imagine that because of the monochromatic dreariness of the photographs. Isn't that weird?
My Minnesota Golden Gophers men's hockey team scored a HUGE recruiting coup recently when they inked Phil Kessel to a commitment. This young man has a ton of talent, and is sure to step right in and help the Gophers win back the national title next season. He may only play a season or two and then head for the Big Show (if there ever IS a Big Show again, that is), but we'll enjoy him while he's here. He's a "can't miss" NHL prospect.
Had to love Paris Hilton's explanation for her much-publicized feud with Nicole Richie: "I don't want to go into too much detail, other than to say that Nicole knows what she did." Perfect. It reminds me of the time when the allegations of sexual impropriety between televangelist Jim Bakker and "actress" (ahem) Jessica Hahn surfaced back in the late 80s. I saw the two of them on some news/talk show back then. She was in the studio and he was calling in from somewhere, and they were on split screen. No matter what Jessica Hahn said about him or about the allegations and no matter what kinds of names she called him, all Bakker kept saying was, "Jessica knows the truth", over and over again. There was nothing she could say that would stick as long as he kept saying that. I thought it was brilliant.
Comedian George Carlin is funny, but he's so anti-religion that he makes me sick. You're not going to be laughing if you die without finding Christ, Mr. Carlin.
First day of May tomorrow, I hope it's nice and warm where you are. Summer is just around the corner now here in Minnesota. Ahhhhhhh.
Cheers!
